This might be a little bit of old news, but late last year I got myself a Steamdeck. I love this thing! I recall reading a review where it was described as a portable gaming device that’s about the size of a small cat. It wasn’t wrong. The thing has definitely got some weight to it and its a respectable size. I’ve used the steam platform for over ten years and over that time I’ve managed to gather quite a collection of games, over two thousand total now. So to me it made sense to get the unit and with the money I had around Christmas time. I ran with it.
The device runs a custom OS based off of Arch-Linux. SteamOS boots directly into steam on power up within a few seconds and does have an option to boot into a XWindows. With a docking station and Bluetooth support its literally a little hand held computer with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Throw in an easily accessible micro SDCard slot and its got plenty of storage for all sorts of things.
One of my first installs on my deck was RetroArch, I love my emulators having grown up with systems like the ColecoVison, Intellivison, Atari 2600, Nintendo, You get the idea. While I don’t use the device every day its gone with me a few times and has been a great source for fun and entertainment. I’ve even installed Discord on it so I can chat and stream from it.
